Do to others ...

"Do to others as you would have them do to you."

It was preached by Christ (Luke 6:31), but it's a practical and useful teaching for everyone. It may just be the greatest philosophy there is to live your life by.

Let's consider some things.

Would you like people to lie to you?

Would you like people to cheat, swindle, and mislead you?

Would you like people to steal from you, to take your possessions, and to ruin what you love?

Would you like to be hit in the face, beaten up, assaulted, or worse?

Would you appreciate it if people were verbally abusive to you?

Do you like it when people treat you rudely?

Do you like people who act as if they are superior to you?

Do you want people to step on you in order to improve their own status and position?

Do you like being used or taken for granted or treated as inferior?

Would you like to be hated just because of your race or gender?

Would you like to be disadvantaged solely because of where you were born or what class of society you come from?

Would you want to be thrown in prison for your political opinions?

Would you like to be discriminated against because of your religion or theology?

Would you like people to loathe you because of who you love?

Would you like to be despised because of physical abnormalities or problems?

Do you want people to avoid you because of the way you look?

Do you want people to use you as a slave and force you into a life of servitude?

Do you want to have your freedoms denied?

Do you want people to do any kind of wrong, no matter how small or large, to you?

Do you want others to stand by and do nothing when you are being wronged?

I am certain your answer to every single one of the questions above is no. Then why do you do wrong to others? Why do you stand by and do nothing when others are being wronged? Why do you not treat people with the same dignity, respect, and attitude you would expect to be treated with?

We should all strive to live by the philosophy of doing to others what we would have them do to ourselves. I'll give it a try. I don't know how well I will do, but it certainly deserves my best attempt. And it deserves your best attempt too. Will you try, though?
