Today saw a little dream of mine shattered. I'd seen it coming for a couple of days and that softened the blow considerably, but it still hurt. It looks like I won't be able to go to the opening concert of U2's next tour in Miami as the person I planned to go with can't go, and I really don't think I should go to a concert alone considering how bad my vision is, especially not my first rock gig. There goes the Miami idea, right out the window. So I'm now planning for the Atlanta gig (as I always have) and the show that will be directly before or after it in North Carolina. I'll be in the US for the whole month of March, so I would at least like to attend a number of U2 shows. Not quite sure if I'll be able to, and it will be somewhat dependent upon the tour schedule, but when dates are announced, would anyone (particularly on the US east coast) be willing to host me just for a night or so? All I will require is someone who's going to the show to pick me up from the airport, take me to the concert, and depending on flight times back to where I am staying in Tennessee, either drop me back at the airport or offer me a place to sleep (a couch will do) for the night.
I have nothing else to say today so I am going to use my LJ paid account privileges for the sake of randomness. I thought I'd do a poll of favourite unreleased U2 songs. I've uploaded a selection for those who haven't heard them - listen and vote!
1978 demo - The Fool: This is the earliest known U2 studio recording, and from this session, we also have the legendary unreleased Street Mission. If I remember the date of this recording properly, the ages of the band members at the time ranged between 16 and 18.
1982 demo - Be There: This is from an aborted studio session in the US during the October Tour. This song ultimately evolved into 1989's All I Want Is You.
1987-04-25 San Francisco soundcheck - My Time Hasn't Come: This song was created on the spot during a soundcheck for the 25 April 1987 concert. U2 also played another spontaneous song, Move Out, during this soundcheck dominated by checks for Mothers Of The Disappeared, which was performed for only the second time that night. One Tree Hill was also checked, although it wasn't played live until the third leg of the tour in the second half of 1987.
1990 studio sessions - Take You Down: In 1990, a bootleg entitled 'Salome: the Axtung Beibi Out-takes' leaked from U2's recording sessions in Berlin's Hansa Ton studios for the much-anticipated Achtung Baby. This is one of the standout tracks and it includes Bono singing different lyrics in both vocal channels (though I'd swear one channel is sometimes The Edge), the solo that went on to become an integral part of The Fly, and Bono wailing "wake up dead man," the title of 1997's remarkably different, mournful closer to the Pop album. Elements of many U2 songs from the nineties can be heard in this song.
2001-08-06 Antwerp impromptu live song - I Love You: At the 6 August 2001 concert in Antwerp, two days before Edge's fortieth birthday, U2 broke out in this spontaneous song that has been given the title I Love You. Bono's lyrics are obviously completely made up on the spot ("gonna make it up as I go along" is one of the lines!) and the complete spontaneity of this song has to be one of the high points of the wonderful Elevation Tour.
