Stupidest reason to kill somebody ever?
This is the most fucked up thing I've read in a long time: Elderly Sydney man beaten to death over water restrictions dispute. The guy was even complying with the damn restrictions! Such absolutely insane, excessive violence is completely beyond my comprehension. This has be one of the most thoroughly stupid reasons for killing somebody in the history of the world.

I think water is going to be the cause of the next world war (well, unless the US stirs things up a little more in the middle east)

but really... large portions of the world are going through major droughts, and the winners will be the ones who control the world water supply.

*sigh*

My sister is living in Paraguay, many of her neighbors think she's an american spy checking out their water supply, so that it can be stolen from them and sent to the US.

Yeah, I wouldn't be shocked if broad water resource disputes spiralled into serious military confrontations. The potential is certainly already there in some parts of the world - for example, control of the Jordan River's water looks like it may soon become the most critical issue in the Israeli peace process. There's some serious tension in southeast Asia over the control of various rivers too. And, well, speaking of the US in the Middle East - in the aftermath of the Iraqi quagmire, just who is going to get the Tigris and Euphrates? And are all the other parties who'd like it really going to just sit back and let that be that ...?

Speaking of stealing water, though, I can't help but think of some of the more amusing plans to solve Australia's water crisis. My favourite was sending ships to Antarctica to tow some of its ice back to Australia. I knew some people who in all seriousness thought that would be a fantastic solution. "There's all that water down there doing nothing! Let's take it!" Yeah, great idea, throw around shitloads of money for little positive return while you bugger up the Antarctic ecosystem ...

But hey, here's a good way to get a girl to stick to the water restrictions while showering. Stick a spider in there with her.

That was my experience this morning. Big daddy long legs. It was very arachnophobia.

Heee, oh dear. Though daddy longlegs aren't dangerous at all! In fact, I find them kind of intriguing.

Now, if it were a redback, then you should be worried. I once found one in my schoolbag, back when I was twelve.

Ugh, I've done no work today.

Not intriguing when they almost fall on your head. When I turned off the water, that must have somehow changed the airflow, because he fell. I screamed girlishy and jumped out of the shower, getting water all over and somewhat injuring myself. But it turns out he caught himself with his web stuff and was able to go back up just fine. But still.

I did a solid hour. Didn't quite finish, but close.

OK, well, that'd be scary, yeah. I'd probably just reflexively grab the insect spray and use so much that the bathroom would be too toxic to enter for two days ...

The spider's disappeared now. I hope it doesn't leap out of a corner and scare me.
