The federal election and three other topics
So, what's been happening lately?

1. John Howard finally announced the date of the bloody Australian federal election. It'll be on 24 November. Here's hoping we've got just approximately 40 days of Howard left. He's been Prime Minister the entire time I've lived in Australia and every term seems to be worse than the last. The desperate fearmongering attempts by the Liberals at the moment are hysterical, and Kevin Andrews should be ashamed of himself. Now that nobody gives a shit about terrorism and there are no waves of illegal immigrants, something has to be manufactured to appeal to the far right morons who unfortunately exist in this country, so of course, people who look different like the Sudanese appear in the crosshairs. Ironic how a group so apparently prone to crime has a crime rate lower than the Australian average. It's time to turf this braindead government out onto the streets. I was fairly lukewarm about Liberal-lite Labour until Kevin Rudd came to the helm, but now I sure know where my vote's going. I especially hope that those of you in marginal seats vote against the Liberals/Nationals. I'm (un?)fortunately in a safe Labour seat.

2. I've just about stopped giving a shit about the Rugby World Cup. It's not just that New Zealand's gone; Argentina's the only team really keeping things interesting. The problem is the scheduling. We just went six days without a game and it felt like a damn year. Didn't the RWC organisers learn a thing from the mindnumbingly drawn out Cricket World Cup? Play games more frequently!

3. You know what I hate? How Radiohead are suddenly being hailed as changing the face of music for releasing their new album independently via their website and listeners can choose to pay however much they like (or precisely nothing). It's hardly anything new; I've gigabytes of albums I acquired for free directly from bands' websites, but apparently that doesn't matter if you're a Radiohead hipster who needs to hype up a rather mediocre band. Also, the new album is laughably bad. Literally laughably bad. I'm not kidding when I say I burst out in laughter during the first track. What a trainwreck of an album.

4. You know what I love? Justifiable bragging. Yeah, I can't help myself. I got an essay back earlier this week with the following note: "this is a very impressive piece of work, one of those rare essays which I both marked and took notes from." Somehow I think I will pursue this topic further.

And that's about it for now. Have a good one, folks.

I still like Radiohead though :P

I haven't listened to the new album yet, but I think the shock is more because they're a bigger, better-known band then most who give their music away for free online. Unless you count the drama with NIN telling people to illegally download their stuff...

Certainly their prominent stature gives a meaningfulness to their release method that simply doesn't apply to a band like Demilich or Ruined Machines, and I don't mean to discount that. I think this is good for music and I hope other bands as well-known as Radiohead follow suit. I just hate how some people are acting as if Radiohead are the first band to do it or that this is some incredible idea Thom Yorke dreamt up that had never occurred to anybody before. It's not an original strategy in the slightest.

But it seems the innovator rarely gets credited. How many people can name Hank Marvin these days ...?

Let's be real here. Expecting Radiohead to (a) come up with an original idea, and (b) not be undeservedly lionized for being innovative and original and brilliant no matter what they do? Foolish!

I managed to give In Rainbows a listen while doing O Chem homework (stupid long hw assignments..) and I have to agree with you, I'm not impressed. And a lot of the stuff I've seen is crediting them for starting the whole idea, which is stupid.

I'm glad you don't have me for liking some of their music though :P

I seem to be cursed with friends who like all the music I hate. ;)

At least I'm not the only person who doesn't think In Rainbows is incredible. I can't believe the praise it's getting. That opening track in particular is hysterical.

At least I don't like Backstreet Boys or any crap like that. And I'm very proud to say I never have :P

Haha! I once knew a guy who liked the Backstreet Boys. I never was able to fathom quite how that worked.

I think #4 would have made me skip a lap around campus, and Western is on a (steep) hill!

Sorry about disappearing on earlier. I fell asleep while you were gone. I made it to 6AM my time though!

Hee! I restrained myself to a couple of phone calls to gloat.

And haha, I figured that must have happened. I do hope you got all that work done and weren't too exhausted.

Only a couple? And not even a scan of it to post on LJ? Amazing.

I got it done. It has officially been Sleep Deprivation Week.
*The next night, I was trying to catch up on all the reading I put off to write that paper, and the fire alarm in my building went off. THREE TIMES. Our system was fucked up, so we RAs had to do rounds every half-hour all night to make sure the building didn't burn.
*Tuesday night I stayed up late to do the reading.
*Last night I was on call, and so had to do rounds. I did get a full eight hours though. It's been an adventurous week, but I'M SO GOING HOME THIS WEEKEND.

Hee, I figured that would be obnoxious boasting.

And yikes! That sounds decidedly anti-fun. I don't know how you're still functioning! I'm dead to the world if I have any less than 7 hours of solid sleep. If I were you, I wouldn't bother going home for the weekend - I'd just go to sleep around 8pm Friday on the nearest comfy bed and wake somewhere around 8am the following Monday.

Loooooooooooooots of coffee. I am depleting rather rapidly my "Big Red Dollars" which are currency on our student ID cards that we can spend everywhere on campus. Caffeine is an amazing thing. Besides, unless I'm EXHAUSTED, which I'm not now, I couldn't sleep for all the guilt of not being productive.

I normally wouldn't go home on the eve of such an important week (I'm involved in organizing a protest to the indignation of our university's president, hahaha) but I haven't been home all semester. I'm not available to go home until Thanksgiving break but for this weekend, and I need to get my winter clothes before the cool weather is the rule rather than the exception.

And I know you're interest will be piqued, so here: http://www.wkuherald.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&ustory_id=32c62ccc-e138-41af-8b25-0f50a4cc8db2
